QUOTES

"I have learned not to worry about love; But to honor its coming with all my heart." - Alice Walker (1944~) American Author, Critic

WORD OF THE WEEK

kindred • \KIN-drud\ • adjective

1 : of a similar nature or character : like

2 : of the same ancestry

Example Sentence:

The rock-climbing club tends to attract kindred spirits -- outdoorsy, adventurous types who derive satisfaction from conquering new challenges.

Did you know?

If you believe that advice and relatives are inseparable, the etymology of "kindred" will prove you right. "Kindred" comes from a combination of "kin" and the Old English word ræden ("condition"), which itself comes from the verb rædan, meaning "to advise." "Kindred" entered English as a noun first, in the 12th century. That noun, which can refer to a group of related individuals or to one's own relatives, gave rise to the adjective "kindred" in the 14th century.

Romance Novel TV

One Night Stand by Cindy Kirk
Reviewed by Mayra David
One Night Stand, is Cindy Kirk's follow up to When She Was Bad. It picks up where the other left off, briefly revisiting the life of her first heroine, Jenny Carman, then continuing with her best friend Marcee. This is a sweet story about mixed messages and two people at cross purposes being pulled together in spite of themselves. Kirk's characters and settings have a real air of authenticity to them – she forgoes glamour in favor of small town life and parenthood. She also handles adolescent relationships very well, often showing that teenagers are sometimes more mature than adults! The personalities in the book are so familiar that it's easy and fun to imagine Kirk's sizzling suburbia.  (more...)

NEWS and some Opinions...

What will happen in Sex and the City the MOVIE?

"After years of living in the city I assumed that if my friends and I ever got our fairy tale endings that would be the end of the story. But real life- always has a twist"
– Carrie Bradshaw

I bet Candace Bushnell never thought that women around the country would be tuning in every week for the next installment in the lives of Carrie, Miranda, Charlotte, Samantha and of course Big. I did, like clockwork. I loved the fashion, the frankness, and the relationships that developed over four years. I admit, it was sad to say goodbye, but the show’s creators rewarded us loyal fans with a happy ending. The writers allowed each character to grow, from sex craved, relationship starved, self-centered women into four, sexy, glamorous, determined, women with a bond to each other that endured some trying times. When the series ended, I was satisfied. Miranda had a husband, a child, a mother-in-law and she learned to love and care, Samantha survived cancer, learned to trust and was in a committed relationship, and one of the sexier 40- somethings on TV. Charlotte found love and motherhood, and Carrie finally got her man.

So, now the movie. I will most certainly be in the theatre when the film opens on May 30th. I won’t be able to stay away, and it’s not one of those, “I’ll wait to rent it” type films. I don’t want word of mouth to spoil it. I want to sit there and watch on a screen that’s bigger than my house, in the dark with the my coke and twizzlers and popcorn – and gaze lovingly at the fashion and antics. But – I await the release without a small amount of trepidation. Here’s why – they already gave me my happy ending – period the end. Could I stand to see them ‘mess’ with my idea of what their lives are like now? Hmmmm…. It’s a wait and see situation if ever there was one. (more...)

Everyone's Got an Opinion - But Would You Pay for to Hear Them?
Tribune Media Services (TMS) has launched a new magazine for those who own a KINDLE. Yup, if you’ve got one of those e-books readers – you too can get other people’s opinions from politics to finance delivered right to your breakfast table for only $1.49 a month.

It’s a bargain at any price, right? Well, not so fast. Many of the ‘voices’ can be found for free on the internet - The lineup includes people like Ian Bremmer, Carl Hiaasen, Arianna Huffington, Jesse Jackson, Garrison Keillor, Henry Kissinger, Clarence Page, William Pfaff, Leonard Pitts, and Jules Witcover. Perhaps we’ve gotten to the point that clicking around and surfing the web, or going from one individual site to another to get an opinion is just too difficult. So for less then a daily cup of skimmed mocha espresso latte decaf at Starbucks – poof, you’ve downloaded everyone’s opinion, from left to right all at once. Wow, I’m gonna put that on my Christmas list this year.

Silhouette Launches Nocturne Bites

Future releases in the line will feature authors Lisa Renee Jones, Karen Whiddon Vivi Anna and Lori Devoti.

Guest Author Patrice Michelle

Award-winning author Patrice Michelle, was born and raised in the Southeast and gave up her financial calculator for a keyboard and never looked back. Thanks to an open-minded family who taught her that life isn't as black and white as we're conditioned to believe, she pens her novels with the belief that various shades of gray are a lot more interesting. She's a natural with a point-and-shoot camera, likes to fiddle with graphic design and, to the relief of her family, strums her guitar to an audience of one.

As for becoming a writer... Patrice says "I wasn't one of those writers scribbling stories as soon as I could write, but I was a voracious reader. At the age of fifteen, I told my mom after I'd finished reading a book, One day, I want to be the one who writes the kind of books readers think about long after they've closed it."

Scions: Insurrection

A Notorious Proposition by Adele Ashworth
Reviewed by Andrea Williamson

When I read my first Adele Ashworth book, DUKE OF SIN, I was instantly hooked. I absolutely adored her voice and immediately wanted to glom her backlist. Unfortunately, most of her backlist was (and still is) out of print and some of those were going for (and still are) what it would cost to fill the tank in your car with gas nowadays. The one book that I desperately wanted was WINTER GARDEN. I had heard tons of people rave and rave about it and I just had to find out what the fuss was about. I was lucky enough to track down a used copy for about $15.00, which I considered a steal. When I received my coveted copy, I devoured it, enjoyed it immensely and knew exactly why so many people consider it an all time favorite. So, when I heard the news that Ms. Ashworth was going to revisit the mythical town of Winter Garden for her next book, I was both excited and anxious! When I got the chance to read it early, I leapt with joy! And when I received it, I devoured it as well. Needless to say, I was not disappointed in the least! Here’s a little about A NOTORIOUS PROPOSITION… (more...)

Cry No More by Linda Howard
Reviewed by Anna Campbell

I have a major beef with this book.

Why is it called CRY NO MORE? It should be called CRY BUCKETS!

This is one of the most deeply emotional romance novels I’ve ever read. It starts in Mexico with the heart-wrenching kidnap of the heroine’s baby then continues in a whirlwind from there.

Linda Howard is such a great writer. And I can see MaryKate shares my admiration for her – it’s interesting that we both chose a novel by Linda Howard from our old favorites pile to review within a week or so of each other. Make sure you check out MK’s review of SHADES OF TWILIGHT in the latest RNTV blogs.

One of the many things I really admire about Linda Howard is her ability to write strong characters who are completely individual and completely compelling. They’re not unflappable automatons who face unbeatable odds without ruffling a hair. Instead, because we know how human these people are, their courage and integrity leap off the page as they battle situations that would send most of us spare. (more...)
